These figurines represent highly abstracted human bodies. They are based on the stage design "Picture XVI: The Great Gate of Kiev" by Wassily Kandinsky, created in 1928 for a theatrical production of Modest Mussorgsky’s piano cycle "Pictures at an Exhibition" at the Friedrich-Theater in Dessau. Here, I have further reduced Kandinsky’s figurines to the basic shapes of the triangle and the circle and overlaid them with a grid. This results in eight triangles of varying sizes and one circle. All the figurines shown here can be constructed—or printed—using these nine shapes. Additionally, I utilize the vertical axis of symmetry for all shapes, allowing them to be printed in two colors.

Tree Ornaments

A wide variety of figures can be created from the nine basic shapes mentioned above. The shapes feature a hole running along the vertical axis of symmetry. A 0.8 mm brass wire can be inserted into this hole; it stabilizes the stacked shapes while also serving as a loop for hanging. I print these shapes using an affordable Bambu Lab A1 with an AMS system for multi-color printing, and I use a 0.2 mm nozzle to ensure maximum quality.

Magnetic Signs

Printed magnetic signs are a great application for the figurines.

The signs are 72 or 96mm high, 24 or 32mm wide and 2.8mm thick. An embedded neodymium magnet - 10mm diameter and 1mm thick - ensures a secure hold on all metallic surfaces. Since the magnet is printed invisibly, the figurine can be used on both sides.

The signs can be produced using any good FDM 3D printer equipped with a color-changing system. I use an affordable Bambu Lab A1 with the AMS Lite color changer. To achieve the best possible print quality, I use a 0.2 mm nozzle and a layer height of 0.1 mm, pausing the print after 20 layers (or at a height of 2 mm) to glue in the magnets. When selecting filaments, make sure they are suitable for use with a 0.2 mm nozzle.

The file "figurines.3mf" contains all nine basic forms and features a longitudinal hole (vertical axis of symmetry) for a 0.8 mm thick wire. Additionally, the forms are prepared for coloring.

And finally, a ZIP file named "magnetic-signs.zip" for the magnetic signs, containing the twelve signs in STL format and, in addition, a 3MF file with all the signs.
